From broken hearts and friendship to post-apocalyptic playlists.
Since 2001 TRICKY WOMEN/TRICKY REALITIES takes place in Vienna in March. The festival focuses on animated works made by women and/or genderqueer artists and therefore fills a unique position within the festival landscape. We aim to create space for the possible, emphasizing alternative ways to express Tricky Realities. Step into a world where imagination knows no bounds and storytelling transcends reality.
In this selection of awarded animated films experience the emotional journey of a woman navigating past heartbreak, the exploration of dysfunctional family dynamics, and the suspense of unexpected turns during a couple’s birthday dinner. Marvel as family photographs weave together new tales of interconnected lives. Dive into the diverse universe of sisterhood in a convent, and contemplate the poignant metaphor of healing in Tako Tsubo, exploring the broken heart syndrome. Lastly, embark on an existential adventure with two spectral beings navigating the remnants of humanity. Welcome to a cinematic odyssey where each frame tells a story waiting to be discovered!

The main character starts to feel deeper emotions for a guy, but she is afraid of falling in love again because of her past with her first love. So she runs off, rushing memories take her on an imaginary journey, forcing her to untangle her confused mind and heart.

A group of nuns lives in a monastery in happy harmony. While working in the garden, one of them digs up a man. The resulting dreams cause her to lose her mind and fall out of step with the rhythm of the convent.
Mr. Ham decides to heal a broken heart by having it removed, as this is the socially acceptable treatment of pain. Holding onto the organ after the surgery, maybe he can begin to understand it better. The film takes its name from a medical condition known as “broken heart syndrome”.
Mankind no longer exists, only Fluor and Carlix remain, two ghosts in sportswear. They wander among the remains of an extinct civilization, one in search of a WiFi connection, the other in search of the head of a giant cetacean. A story of encounter and friendship, punctuated by a final playlist: that of the end of the world.
